BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP... FOR THE CONTRACTOR
Today - For The Contractor
IAHFIAW Local 110 is proud to provide the following benefits to contractors:
Productivity - Union members take pride in completing jobs on time (or ahead of schedule) and on (or under) budget. Members can and do complain to the Hall when they are sitting idle at a job. They would rather be working than waiting.
Safer Workplaces - Yes, laws give workers rights. Alberta has too few Occupational Health & Safety Investigators to handle the huge workforce in today's Alberta. Does your company consider worker rights' law too costly, restrictive or uneccesarily intrusive to business production? Do you know what your rights are? The Union puts your rights into words, known as the Collective Agreement.
Fewer Workers Compensation Claims - Our member Insulators are an educated and skilled workforce, unlikely to put themselves (or others) into situations where injuries can occur. Fewer claims means fewer injuries. Fewer injuries means your work schedule is met. Fewer claims means your costs remain low.
Uniform Benefit Administration - Union member benefits are guaranteed by the work they do. Workers do not search for the employer who offers the best benefits.
No Benefit Administration Costs - Benefits questions are handled by the Union, not the employer. This saves you time, money and resources.
Skilled Workforce - Union members are proud of the work they do. Union members are dispatched with the certifications you identify as requirements for the job. This saves you valuable training curve time at each project.
Flexible Workforce - Union members are dispatched to specific shifts on specific job sites, according to your work order. When the shift is no longer required, the members accept a lay-off. When the job is over, the workers accept lay-offs. If your plans change and you suddenly require more workers, one work order faxed to the Hall gets you workers - frequently the next morning, sometimes on the same day (according to your needs and worker availability). Name hiring is an option for many jobs - if this is something you need to consider, the Union is willing to work with you.
Mobility - As a union member, you can work around the world. Does your employer offer you this option? Could you obtain the required permits to work in another country if your employer was not sponsoring you? The Union provides this option.
Worker Morale - Union members work as a team. Union members consider themselves part of a much larger team, the International Association of Heat & Frost Insulators and Allied Workers. Strong worker morale contributes to your bottom line in so many ways, it is difficult to isolate any, but for example: pride of workmanship, which translates to well-done work for your company.
Profitability - Pride of workmanship, the desire to complete jobs in a timely fashion, the almost instant availability of a workforce without the overhead and time delay of advertising for and interviewing applicants - all of these improve your bottom line.
Business Partnership - The days of the adversarial relationship between Union and Employer are almost over. IAHFIAW Local 110 recognizes the need to keep contractors in business, because contractors supply the work orders for our work force. While we can't promise a completely trouble-free relationship, we can and do promise a teamwork approach to dispute resolution and collective bargaining.
Drug Free Workplace - Our Code of Conduct takes a strong stand against substance abuse. Does yours? We enforce our Code of Conduct and continue to provide highly skilled Insulators. Can your company say the same things?
Worker Loyalty - Union members have an open and timely dispute resolution process that clears the air of most complaints in a way that satisfies everyone involved. Our Code of Conduct holds Insulators to a higher standard - often higher than those of other trades. Are your workers willing to resolve disputes or are they more likely to leave the job or find ways to sabotage your efforts?
Dispute Resolution - As a union contractor, you have people (like the Job Stewards and Business Agents) who work to resolve complaints quickly and efficiently. You know what your rights and obligations are. Your workers know their rights and obligations. This reduces a great deal of complaining about situations that are irrelevant to the work at hand.
Keeping Work Available - Part of the Collective Bargaining process is making sure contractors will have work available during the course of the next Contract. The Union strives for this by keeping requirements reasonable and respecting the changing marketplace. When your company has work, our members have work - a win-win situation.
Promotion - Our training programs make it possible for members to learn new skills and be prepared for upcoming labour requirements. When you have an opening for skilled staff at higher levels, call our Business Agents to find out which members are already trained and ready to take on more responsibility in your company.
If you are a contractor without the benefits of Union workers, you need to contact Bill Spring at (780) 426-2874. Your company, your income and your future depend on the actions you take!
