BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP... FOR THE WORKER
Today - For The Worker
IAHFIAW Local 110 is proud to provide the following benefits to members:
Safer Workplaces - Yes, laws give workers rights. Alberta has too few Occupational Health & Safety Investigators to handle the huge workforce in today's Alberta. Employers may not know, or may not care about, the laws that protect workers. Some people consider worker rights' law too costly, restrictive or unnecessarily intrusive to business production. Do you know what your rights are? The Union puts your rights into words, known as the Collective Agreement.
Fewer Workers Compensation Claims - Our member Insulators are an educated and skilled workforce, unlikely to put themselves (or others) into situations where injuries can occur. Fewer claims means fewer injuries. Fewer injuries means you are more likely to remain healthy, active, employed and enjoying life beyond your hours of employment.
Uniform Benefit Administration - As a union member, your benefits are guaranteed by the work you do. There is no need to search for the employer who offers the best benefits - and many non-represented workers have no benefits at all!
Mobility - As a union member, you can work around the world. Does your employer offer you this option? Could you obtain the required permits to work in another country if your employer was not sponsoring you? The Union provides this option.
Dispute Resolution - When you have a complaint about working conditions, are you taken seriously? In fact, are you able to raise the issue at all without fear of losing your job? As a union member, you have people (like the Job Stewards and Business Agents) who work on your behalf to resolve complaints and/or move them to higher levels for resolution. You know what your rights and obligations are. The employer is not at liberty to put you into an unsafe or unsuitable workplace when you are a union member.
Keeping Work Available - When your employer finishes this contract, where will you work - and when? Part of the Collective Bargaining process is making sure contractors will have work available during the course of the next Contract. The Union is also kept informed of jobs available in all other areas of Canada. Your travel card allows you to work when there isn't much available close to home in your area of expertise.
Promotion - Are you interested in moving into Supervision, Health & Safety, or other aspects related to the construction industry? Would your employer allow you to do that, and retain you as an employee? The Union works with contractors to provide skilled workers in various areas besides hands-on insulating. Our training programs make it possible to learn new skills and be prepared for upcoming labour requirements.
If you are an Insulator without the benefits of Union representation, you need to contact Ron Stock or Jack Wilson at (780) 426-2874, or Tom Chapple at (403) 243-1234. Your life, your income and your future depend on the actions you take!
